It is still considered to be a lucky omen for a chimney sweep to attend weddings, so that the bride and groom can be wished well for the future.
Lucky chimney sweeps are following a tradition that started about two hundred years ago, when an unknown London chimney sweep saved the life of King George 2nd. The horses that were pulling the King's carriage became frightened and suddenly bolted. The only person brave enough to step out of the crowd and pull up the horses to save his majesty's life was that unknown chimney sweep. The sweep disappeared back into the crowd again before the King could thank him, but was so pleased that he made an announcement by the royal decree that all chimney sweeps are good luck bearers and must be treated with honour and respect. The folklore is still believed today, and lucky sweeps are still invited on weddings to bless the newlyweds.
